Why do people go to war if it carries so many bad connotations?

People go to war to fight off enemies, gain power, take control, cause chaos and confusion, etc. People volunteer because they wanted to fight for the cause, protect who or what they were fighting for, get the benefits of joining the army, etc. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out the basic reason why...
